Directed by Neil Jordan, and starring Liam Neeson, Julia Roberts and Aidan Quinn. With great supporting roles played by Alan Rickman and Stephen Rea, this movie captures the tumultuous years between the Easter Rising in 1916 and the Civil War when everything was up for grabs, all of the rules were made to be broken and the foundation of the Irish Nation were being laid in a bitter struggle between both sides of the divide, often within the same family.
With urban guerrilla tactics and organized assassinations, Sinn Fein and the IRA force the English forces to the table to negotiate and settlement. Alas the absence of Eamon de Valera from the top table leaving Collins to negotiate what was later unacceptable to Dev, left an Island as divided as ever and faced with civil war.
A brilliant and moving tale of espionage, violence, humour, betrayal and of course love, definitely a must on the top ten Irish movies.
